Introduction

As innovation has grown, so too has the manner in which we learn new abilities. Nowadays, due to pandemic many private and government schools have started online education due to the school being closed. In addition to completing the course, the doubts are also being cleared online.

Before these situations arrived it was always a big-time debate regarding which is better online classes or offline classes and now that almost all schools and colleges are using online modes for teaching, there are many points of view regarding the same, positive as well as negative.

The main difference between online and offline learning is location. With offline learning, participants are required to travel to the training location, typically a lecture hall, college or classroom.

With online learning, on the other hand, the training can be conducted from practically anywhere in the world. Participants simply need to log on to the internet from their home, workor even their local coffee shop. What are the factors which depend on Online classes vs Offline classes?

It depends on two factors:

1. The child’s ageand learning independence

Without understanding the specific needs of a child, it is difficult to say whether online math classes are better or offline math centres are better. The choice comes down to two main factors – age and learning independence as we discuss below.

Which classes are better? Offline classes or Online classes (1)

For children aged 4 to 16 (KG to grade 10), a teacher is always needed. These are the foundational years. New topics are introduced. Children will have questions and doubts. Best learning outcomes are achieved only if these questions and doubts are resolved immediately by a teacher irrespective of the mode of class. Even if it is being conducted online, there is a need for dedicated time for catering to the doubts of the students.

  1. 4 to 12 years old children require a lot more one-to-one attention and support. Often they won’t voluntarily sit and learn for more than a few minutes. So a one-to-one teacher-student arrangement is needed to encourage and motivate children. The teacher’s role is to drive effort. In both online and offline classes, teachers actually focus on them, work best for such children.
  2. Around age 13, children can learn independently. They understand the seriousness of studies and can stick to a schedule that has been defined for them. So these children can log in and connect with the best teachers online.
  3. Regardless of the age of the student, it is an established fact that the student will get the best quality teachers online and they would save a lot of time and energy of travel.

After this, other factors need to be considered. Centre-based classes often require parents to make pick-up and drop arrangements. Having a centre that is walking distance from your home makes the logistics significantly easier to manage but that most of the time results in getting a teacher which is not up to the mark. Else, you may have to opt for online classes.

2. The student-teacher interaction variation

Regardless of your choice between online vs offline centre-based math classes, the presence of a teacher is very important for children between 4 and 16 years of age. Any learning system that does away with a teacher for this age group is simply ineffective. The student-teacher relationship is a strong indicator of student learning outcomes.

In a centre-based math class, the teacher’s presence helps children concentrate and work for a longer duration. Most 4 to 12-year-olds left to themselves will not opt to study. Thus the teacher’s role is to make the class engaging and encourage children to put in the effort. At this age, children must do hands-on activities to learn well. The presence of a teacher again helps facilitate such learning activities.

Which classes are better? Offline classes or Online classes (2)

In an online class, when a teacher is present, students have to log-in as per schedule. This discipline ensures the regularity of learning. Also, if the teacher conducts engaging activities, a learning efficiency more or less equal to offline mode can be achieved. Thus an online program must also require students to learn by reasoning, and work on math problems by themselves with a teacher monitoring their progress.

Regardless of offline vs online, Math must be learned by reasoning-Learning math the right way from an early age is important.

  1. Math must be learned by reasoning, doing and discovering.
  2. The teacher needs to be a coach and mentor helping students out, but not giving the answers away.
  3. Children must not feel like they are being judged if they make a mistake.
  4. Children should focus on the process than the result.

Furthermore, at Cuemath we understand each child and build a personalized learning plan.

  1. If the student is well ahead of grade, they’ll move quickly through the topics, do advanced problems and move to the next grade!
  2. If we sense that a student has learning gaps from some previous topics, we first work on those and then proceed. This is what allows us to consistently deliver learning outcomes.

Advantages and disadvantages of online and offline classes

There are various advantages and disadvantages of the online and offline mode of teaching. Here, are somekey points related to it.

The table below shows some advantages and disadvantages of online classes:

Advantages of online classesDisadvantages of online classes

Students could be more comfortable as compared to the offline mode of classes when it comes to clearing doubts.

Students might not get comfortable with teachers and feel shy in asking the doubts.

Students could get a chance to know about the current technology scenario of teaching.

Teachers areunable to check if the students are actually studying.

It saves time and resources.

Less interaction between students and teachers.

The table below shows some advantages and disadvantages of offline classes:

Advantages of offline classesDisadvantages of offline classes

A teacher could pay more attention to students.

Wastage of time and resources.

Students would focus more on studies.

Students might not find a competitive peer group and hence not feel not motivated enough.

More interaction between students and teachers.

Students would not learn about advanced technology.

Conclusion

  1. The choice between online and offline math classes depends on your child’s age and learning independence.
  2. For 4 to 12-year-olds, offline centre-based classes are better if the child is not self-disciplined and does not pay attention. In that case, he would constantly need someone to keep an eye. Although, if he finds maths interesting, then online classes will save his travel time and get him the best of class teachers.
  3. From about age 13, online classes are better in all cases since children understand the seriousness of studies and can log in themselves. They allow them to connect with the best maths teachers worldwide.
  4. For ages 4 to 16, regardless of the mode of math classes, the presence of a teacher is necessary for monitoring the learning.
  5. At the same time, children must learn math by reasoning and by being actively involved. Learning via videos, presentations or even physical classrooms is simply ineffective if they try to mug up the content.
